Dwane Powell at the Raleigh News and Observer has always been one of my favorite cartoonists. He's one of the unsung masters of the editorial cartooning craft, especially sharp on national politics, but come to think of it, especially sharp on local North Carolina politics too. Just especially sharp, I guess. And a hell of a nice guy who picks mandolin to boot.
He got laid off about the same time I did last year, but was able to come up with an arrangement that puts him back in his paper more frequently than I am in mine. Good going, Dwane.

The GOP seems to have taken to heart the advice of a former German leader, "if you tell a lie loud enough and often enough people will begin to believe it" We have seen this time and time again, but there seems to be no effective response commng from the sane elements of society. I guess I am just getting depressed and discouraged.
Maybe Democrats have been out of power so long that they are still operating under the assumption that they have to compromise away almost everything they want to the Republicans. They need to realize that the louder the screams of the far right (and they're at their shrillest right now) the more cornered and desperate the far right actually is. Instead we keep giving in to them. Old habits, I guess.
